Terry Smith Hits Royal Flush at Envy Bar
"I started the hand with king 10 of clubs ... I was kinda low stack so was playing kinda tight and thought I would give this had a try .. I called the bb at 1000. no pre flop raise and I am in the hand .. the flop comes with jack ace clubs and another card that didn't match .. there is a bet of 1000 on the table .. I called .. 3 people in the hand .. I have about 11000 chips left .. the turn card is off .. red card .. I think .. the bet is only 1000 .. I call .. river card is the queen of clubs .. gives me the royal .. bet is made to 5000 from person that landed a straight .. other person calls with 2 pair .. I raise all in with only 5k more to go .. both call and wow .. what a hand .... that is how I remember it."  Terry

D. Bly, Missing in Action...
Some may have noticed that I have not been playing in any live tournaments at our local establishments for some time.  On January 10th I broke my ankle in two places and my leg just below the knee.  Unfortunately, this has and will keep me on the sidelines for quite an extended period.  I've undergone the first of three required surgeries to repair the damage.  I am still actively keeping myself competetive in the league standings by playing online and hope to be able to play live tournaments again this spring.  I'd like to thank our hosts Kenny, Gordon, Dennis and Mike for keeping the league running smoothly.  Unfortunately my planned push to expand the number of venues available to our members has been put on hold indefinitely, however, if you do know of an establishment that would like to bring poker to their patrons, please feel free to call me at 360-551-1209 and we'll discuss how we can make it happen.

Perfect Attendance in November
Due to some coding and record keeping issues, no perfect attendance points will be awarded for the month of November.  We will begin awarding perfect attendance again in December.

Donald Bly wins GPF State Championship
Eight person single table satellite tournaments began at 9 AM on Saturday November 14th, with many players that were just short of qualifying earning enough points to gain entry into the Main Event. Many others earned enough extra points to qualify for larger starting stacks or rebuy possibilities.  Nearly 20 satellite tournaments were conducted prior to the Main Event.

Dispensing chips to players began at 11:00 AM while the last of the satellite tournaments finished up.  Using a spreadsheet program to ensure that every player received the proper chip count made the process orderly and stress free.  Once the sign-in process had completed everyone gathered in front of the Halftime Sports Saloon for a group photo and the issueing of seating cards.

After some brief announcements and an explanation of the League's new, simplfied point tracking system the Main Event got underway at 12:30 PM.  With blinds beginning at 25/50 and lasting for 30 minutes players had ample opportunity to wait for quality hands in their bid to claim the title of Washington State GPF Amateur Poker Champion.  The eventual winner, Donald Bly, folded hands for nearly 2 1/2 hours without winning a single hand before the cards turned and he was able to pull in some modest pots.

1st Place - Donald Bly
2nd Place - Gordon McLeod
3rd Place - Thomas Haley
4th Place - Melissa Kitterman
5th Place - Michael Loeffler
6th Place - Mary Anne Richey
7th Place - Donna Dilger
8th Place - Austin Miller

Players competed for their choice of a winner take all seat at a World Series of Poker bracelet event tournament and $500 in cash for expenses.or an all cash payout.  Ultimately, after Bly and McLeod had exchanged the chip lead several times in a heads up battle, the decision was made to take the all cash payout and chop the prize money 50/50.  At this point, it was all about bragging rights and the right to have their name added to the Robert Richey Memorial Cup Trophy.  The two played on.

McLeod played solid poker and had Bly on the ropes after McLeod's trip 3's took down Bly's pair of dueces in a major pot.  At this point, Bly, without enough chips left to cover the big blind need some major luck and solid play to survive.  He got the luck and hit a streak of good starting hands that enabled him to build his stack to just a bit more than McLeods.  With both players agressively pursuing the title of State Champion the final hand came down to Bly's A6 vs McLeod's K5.  With both players all-in pre-flop, Bly hit the ace on the flop which held up through the turn and the river, giving him the title.

Bad beat of the day.... Mike Loeffler's KK vs Donald Bly's all-in AK with Bly hitting an Ace on the river..

Changes Coming in November....
Beginning November 1st  players that take 1st thru 8th will be awarded GPF points good for qualifying for the semi-annual State Championship.  1st will receive 20 GPF pts, 2nd - 10 GPF pts, 3rd - 6 GPF pts, 4th - 5 GPF pts, 5th - 4 GPF pts, 6th - 3 GPF pts, 7th - 2 GPF pts and 8th - 1 GPF pts.  Players will receive 1 GPF point for each tournament in which they participate and those with perfect attendance at a venue during the month will receive 2 GPF pts.  The league will continue to conduct satellite qualifiers prior to the main event at the State Championship as we have done in the past so players that are short of qualifying points will have a final opportunity to make it to the main event.  Only active league members may play in the Single Table Satellite Tournaments or the Wild Card tables at the State Championship.  To be considered an active member a player must have at least one GPF point.

The Value of Free Poker to You!
What does it take to become skilled at the game of Texas Holdem?  One of the league's hosts in our early days, Jerry Marquez, a Texas Holdem dealer at the Clearwater Casino, once commented that for a player to go from novice to average playing in Casino Tournaments would require an investment of approximately $10,000.  And that's just to become average.  Two months in a row we have seen league members advance through large fields of players at Little Creek Casino and win substantial cash payouts.  We would like to believe that the experience they have acquired through free league play has been instrumental in helping to develop their game to this level.
